Expressway Productions, a Philadelphia-based full service production company, recently produced a promo for the Philadelphia Fashion Incubator Spring 2016 Collections fashion show, which was held last month at Macy’s Center City. Founded in 2012, PFI is a nonprofit collaboration between the city of Philadelphia, Center City District, Macy’s Center City, and several local design schools to mentor a select group of fashion designers and help them establish successful fashion companies in the area.
The promo was shot at Expressway Grip, the company’s equipment rental and crew services provider, which has an open floor space that accommodates equipment demos and small shoots. Available for viewing at https://vimeo.com/138671247, the promo was not Expressway’s first experience with LED lights, but it was a chance to demo the Zylight IS3c soft light. According to Nic Reader, director and co-owner of Expressway, the IS3c was a “brilliant solution” for color options and control.
“The size of the light made it easy to hide beneath the camera to flare the lens with a purple hue,” Reader explained. “And not having to use a hot light to get the punch we needed to create a flare was great, since it was so close to the lens. We even used the light to pass by the lens as an effect for post, which you can see in the video.
Reader said the IS3c performed very well during the shoot. “It was very user friendly and gave us exactly what we wanted for this particular setup,” he added. “Being able to choose a color and select the intensity was very helpful.
Ideal as a background color wash light or wide soft light, the IS3c features Zylight’s Color Mode, which produces millions of colors without gels or filters. Other built-in controls adjust color temperature and color correction. More affordable than ARRI SkyPanel and other color-changing LED lights, the IS3c can be controlled via DMX or ZyLink, Zylight’s integrated wireless control.
