How to Safely Dispose of Electronics

Apr 14, 2022 - With Earth Day on the horizon this month, it's important to keep in mind the impact that technology and electronics have on our environment. While new and exciting, major advancements in technology often have implications for electronic waste. To combat the amount of tech trash this year and beyond, check out some of our tips for safely disposing of old electronics below:

Data Management

Before getting rid of your old laptop or phone, be sure to back up any important data, contacts, photos, files, and more. This way, you can safely clear out the device's memory and saved data, protecting your privacy without losing any information in the process. From credit card information, to IDs or financial data, it's important to erase all of your personal information prior to disposal.

Be Mindful of Toxic Trash

Most people may not be aware of their city or state's policies against throwing out electronics with regular trash. There are many toxic materials inside of your electronics that cannot be disposed of in a landfill, as the chemicals in these products can leak into the surrounding environment, harming plants and animals, and potentially our food supply. Be mindful of your state's mandates surrounding recycled technology, and be careful handling any broken or damaged electronics!

Consider a Philanthropic Route

There are numerous schools, nonprofit organizations, and religious institutions that are readily willing to take donated electronics. Once your used technology is clear of your personal information, consider looking into local donation spots such as Close the Gap, which has collected over 1.13 million assets, World Computer Exchange, or even Medic Mobile. If you're unsure of recycling your old technology, know that it's equally as valuable to donate it and help those in need.

Look Into Your Device's Manufacturer

Companies like Apple, are well aware of the constant turnover and development of new technology. When companies produce new models that make other devices obsolete, it can create a lot of waste. Many manufacturers have taken accountability for their contributions to e-waste, and have implemented recycling programs so that consumers can send their old products back to the company.

In fact, in an effort to reduce our own carbon footprint, Peerless-AV has its own Recycle Program for hospitality wall mounts! Peerless-AV offers a credit to hotel and property customers who choose to recycle their old hospitality wall mount. This is a powerful way to prevent excess waste, utilize less energy, reduce GHG emissions, and ensure proper recycling. Whether it's Apple, Peerless-AV, or another major retailer, many offer responsible recycling programs that are worth considering.

There is no doubt that e-waste is a huge risk to the environment and the health of the general population. To properly manage this issue, we hope that you consider our tips to recycle or donate your used technology this Earth Day.
