Oakville, Ontario, Canada – August 2010… With the goal of addressing the needs of those whose condition cries out most urgently for spiritual renewal and healing, the Queen of Apostles Renewal Centre nurtures a holistic spiritual development of individuals who seek to improve the quality of their life with God. The centre recently underwent a facility revitalization that included enhanced audio capabilities. Now that the enhancements are in place, the centre’s staff finds it easier than ever to prepare the facility for its guests’ meetings—thanks to the audio processing capabilities of their new Aspen SPN2412 Digital Matrix Mixer from Rio Rancho, NM-based Lectrosonics.
Toronto, Ontario-based Field Service.CA, a design/build firm that provides services for themed environments, architectural installations, and theaters, was contracted to handle the centre’s facility upgrade. Wayne Korhonen, Lead Project Designer for the company was tasked with overseeing the project. Working with a design penned by his business associate Scott Smith, Korhonen and his crew installed and programmed the new equipment. He discussed his reasons for selecting the Lectrosonics audio processor.
“The Renewal Centre is a conference/multipurpose facility designed for various ministries to conduct training, spiritual renewal, and related functions,” explained Korhonen. “This facility is essentially a large multipurpose area that can, via removable walls, be configured into as many as five rooms of various sizes and capacities. Our mission was to provide audio capabilities that could easily scale to the various room configurations. Based upon our experience with Lectrosonics’ DM Series audio processing equipment, we were very confident in the ability of the next-generation Aspen Series processors to handle the requirements of this project.”
Korhonen ultimately selected the Lectrosonics SPN2412 Digital Matrix Mixer for the installation. Featuring 24-inputs and 12 outputs, the base configuration provides unlimited input expansion with upwards of 48 mix buses for the largest projects. The SPN2412 features ultra low noise input preamps, a full crosspoint matrix mixer, is TCP/IP Ethernet addressable, and uses a single CAT6 interconnection to carry data, audio, and control signals. The unit also supports the simultaneous use of its Ethernet, RS-232, and USB ports for setup, monitoring, diagnostics, and control. The unit’s RS-232 capability made it a perfect fit for integration with the centre’s AMX® control system.
“We used Lectrosonics’ Aspen Control Panel software, a suite of tools for the setup and configuration of the various processors within the Aspen Series family of products, to configure the SPN2412,” states Korhonen. “The programming topologies of the software are consistent with the company’s DM Series software— LecNet2™— but are also considerably improved, so it was very easy to grasp and use the new application. In addition to managing all auto-mixing and signal routing functions for the various room configurations, the SPN2412 also handles equalization and limiting within the various spaces. With its ability to easily interface with the AMX control system, the SPN2412 provides a seamless means of managing all audio functions at the centre.”
“The various multi-input/output models available within the Aspen Series product line make these processors ideal for addressing a wide range of installations,” Korhonen reports. “The SPN’s auto-mixing environment is first-rate, as is its signal routing capabilities. In addition to the system’s ease of programming, reliability and cost are also key factors that result in our regular use of Lectrosonics equipment.”
The Queen of Apostles Renewal Centre project was completed in late July and, already, Korhonen reports the new system has made quite an impact. “Our client is extremely happy,” he says. “Since the centre’s room configuration is regularly changed, the ability to effortlessly recall the correct sound setup has made matters considerably less stressful for the people tasked with setting up for the numerous events that take place here. While all the mixing and signal routing that takes place is absolutely transparent, it simply wouldn’t happen without Lectrosonics.”
